Matale Aluviharaya (Aluvihara Rock Temple)

Matale  Aluviharaya (Aluvihara Rock Temple) (Alu means ash, viharaya means temple) is a ancient buddhist temple.It is situated Aluvihare village ,matale district, central province of sri lanka.It is situated 30 km away from Kandy,3.5km away from Matale town.Its history dating back 3rd century B.C. to the king Devanampiyatissa. It is belived that the stupa(pagoda) was built by king Devanampiyatissa.It was in this temple that the thripitaka(thri means three, pitaka means books, thripitaka means three books on buddhism) was first written.
